Getting Rich; Today’s Driving Motivation

For years, we didn’t own a car. We lived on cruise ships and in big cities like Paris and New York where a car was more of a burden than a necessity. Our move to North Carolina necessitated the purchase of a vehicle. My brother found a great bargain for us; a 15-year-old Dodge Dakota for sale by owner. The owner, an elderly gentleman, had kept the old red truck in excellent condition and put only about 75,000 miles on it during the entire time he owned it. We paid less than $3K for the car and it has served us well.

Sometimes my daily dose of motivation comes from the strangest sources. I take heart when I remember what a small world this is; it helps bolster confidence as we work to get our name and our product out there in the big leagues of media, retail, and the chocolate industry. For example, I have only one degree of separation between me and the Walton billionaires – a dear friend worked as a Walton family Executive Assistant. Knowing I’m so close makes that level of success seem all the more tangible to me. So, you can imagine my excitement when I discovered a Forbes magazine article about frugal billionaires. The story features people like Warren Buffet, Ikea founder Ingvar Kamprad, and David Cheriton of Google fame. It also mentioned a Wal-Mart billionaire:  "Jim C. Walton, the Wal-Mart scion and member of America’s richest family, has different taste in vehicles. He inherited his money–and spending habits–from father Sam. Worth $16.4 billion when we valued his fortune for the Forbes 400 list in September, Jim prefers pickup trucks to sports cars. Reportedly, he drives a 15-year-old Dodge Dakota.”

If it’s good enough for Jim, it’s good enough for us! I’ll consider it today’s sign from the universe that we’re on the right path toward the life we have imagined. It’s also a confirmation that frugality and luxury can co-exist peacefully.  These billionaires don’t skimp on everything. Each has his own indulgence from fish roe to designer ties to windsurfers. Their lifestyles underline the importance of balancing extravagance with economy. And that brings us back to bon bons, the perfect affordable luxury product. A sweet chocolate indulgence that won’t break the bank. Undoubtedly, the preferred chocolate of frugal billionaires.

25 Silly Holiday Questions

The internet has some people up in arms over the ‘lesser’ forms of communication it has introduced into our social fabric. Email may not allow for voice inflections, facial expressions, or the romantic curl of a handwritten note in cursive lettering, but it does facilitate the wonderful ability to ask silly questions of one’s circle of friends (and get quick answers) with the click of a mouse. Case in point: I received the following silly holiday questions via email from a friend and found myself wanting to play along. Here are my own answers, feel free to post a comment with your own!

1-Wrapping paper or gift bags? Wrapping presents is one of my favorite things to do; I love using great ribbons and old fashioned gift tags.

2-Real tree or artificial? Real. Here at South ‘n France we have two trees; a 12-foot giant and a 6-foot "baby" tree.

3-When do you put the tree up? As soon as our schedule permits; this year it was on December 2nd

4-When to you take it down? After Christmas and always before The New Year

5-Do you like eggnog? Yes

6-Favorite gift received as a child? An Advent Calendar handmade by a friend in Germany

7-Do you have a nativity scene? Yes, a miniature one made by a local artist.  The cradle for Baby Jesus is half of a walnut shell—I love that!

8-Hardest person to buy for? My brother, Trevor

9-Easiset person to buy for? Pascal

10-Worst gift you ever received? Oh my. I once received a hand-knit mini-skirt and sweater set made from bright yellow wool that was about six sizes too small.

11-Mail or email cards? Mail

12-Favorite Christmas movie? So many!  I like Elf and Miracle on 34th Street and The Grinch Who Stole Christmas and Love Actually and It’s A Wonderful Life.  Pascal likes Bad Santa, naughty boy that he is…

13-When do you start shopping? All year; I have a gift dresser and as I see great items, I pick them up and store them in the dresser.

14-Have you ever recycled a gift? Yes, I confess.

15-Favorite Christmas food? French-style Christmas meal-lobster and pate and cheeses and such.  Although one Christmas (while living in France), we ended up eating Chinese take-out!

16-Clear or colored lights? Big, old-fashioned colored lights with tin reflectors

17-Favorite Christmas song? Last night, I listened to the Bette Midler Cool Yule CD-love it!  Thing is, I like almost all Christmas music.  There are just a few I don’t like-that bell song drives me crazy and I don’t like the dogs who bark Jingle Bells, but I listen to all of the rest of it!

18-Travel for the holidays or stay home?   Stay home; but in future years, I desire travel!

19-Can name all Santa’s reindeer?  Of course:  Dasher, Dancer, Comet, Vixen, Donner, Prancer, Cupid, Blitzen, Rudolph — I think that’s right, isn’t it?

20-Angel or star on tree top? Neither; vintage tree toppers.

21-Open presents on Christmas Eve or morning? We open one present each on Christmas Eve and the rest on Christmas morning.

22-Most annoying thing this time of year?  Well, one thing that is annoying is that this questionnaire is all about Christmas and instead of 25 questions there are only 23!

23-What do you love most about Christmas? I love the music and the smell of the trees and revisiting each decoration as we put it on the tree (we buy a Christmas ornament every time we travel). I love getting Christmas cards and wrapping presents and Christmas caroling and cold weather and the Christmas Eve service. I love Advent Calendars and that happy, giddy spirit that everyone gets into those last few days before the season.
(Okay.  I’m adding my own last two questions.  I’ve gotta have 25!)

24-Tinsel or no tinsel?  Growing up we had tinsel on our family tree and I hated it and I especially hated the way it stuck to my clothes when I walked by the tree.  Now, I have clear crystal icicles instead.  They make me much happier.

25-Snow or no Snow?  I always dream of a White Christmas.  I’ve spent Christmases in Fort Lauderdale, North Carolina, Israel and other warm weather climates.  It just isn’t the same as the cold snowy places where I’ve celebrated like France, Canada, and New York.
No matter how or where you celebrate the holiday season, one thing is sure to make you merry — bon bons!

Worth a Thousand Words

I met Millie Holloman a few years ago at a local networking meeting. With start-ups, big business plans, and entrepreneurial dreams in common we quickly hit it off and have been fast friends ever since. We often collaborate on business projects with one another; I’ve learned a lot about photography, and she knows more about bon bons than she probably ever wanted to know. (Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough is Millie’s favorite flavor. She doesn’t like to eat coconut-flavored-anything, but even SHE likes our Coconut Bon Bons too!).

This year, as a special gift to my mother, we arranged a family photo session with Millie. It took some getting organized to gather everyone together at the same time but it was well worth the effort. Everyone agrees, the pictures are incredible and really capture the fun effervescence of our family. You’ll find a preview of our session below; click here to see the entire series!
