Dinner at Mike’s Farm

Mike's Farm

This weekend Pascal and I introduced some friends to our favorite restaurant in the area, Mike’s Farm. It’s about a forty-five minute drive from Wilmington, but it’s worth every penny of the gas it takes to get there! Mike and his wife Theresa run this agri-tourism business in Back Swamp, NC. Yes, really. Back Swamp. It’s right next to Beulaville. On weekends the farm hosts special events (every weekend in October there are hay rides out to the pumpkin patch) and the restaurant is open. We didn’t know there would be an event this weekend, but we arrived just at the end of an antique tractor show and barbeque. We checked out a few tractors and headed straight for the restaurant, which is open three nights a week, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, from 4:30 to 8:30 pm. The menu is always the same: Fried Chicken, Pork Loin and Gravy, Country Ham Biscuits, Mashed Potatoes, Macaroni and Cheese, Green Beans, Corn, Dessert, Soft Drinks and Iced Tea. We paid $13.99 per person, and all of it was brought to our table in big bowls. We served ourselves, family-style, and ate like it was Thanksgiving Day (they’ll keep refilling the bowls as long as you want). Pascal must have had at least fourteen pieces of chicken! One of our friends, who "doesn’t like ham", couldn’t get enough of those country ham biscuits! As for me, I’m a fool for the macaroni and cheese. It’s the most delicious I’ve ever tasted (and I make a pretty good mac ‘n cheese myself!). Theresa, who is a tiny little thing, says it’s her recipe. We seriously considered kidnapping her to find out what secret ingredient makes it so creamy and good. The corn and the green beans are also delicious! In fact, I only ate one small piece of chicken and didn’t even touch the pork, so I could load up on veggies and the mac ‘n cheese.

Homemade desertsThere is also a wonderful bakery at the farm (not that we had any room for baked goods after that meal!). You can see the little gray-haired Southern ladies in the kitchen baking away (our waitress told us that the cooks in the restaurant are Southern ladies too – "just what you’d imagine them to look like", she said). The bakery is famous for its old-fashioned 10-layer chocolate cake. I’ve yet to try it, but I swear that next time I’m going to buy one! I have enjoyed a cheese Danish and sugar cookies on previous visits, and they were both delicious.

We ate at 4:30 pm (it’s best to get there early as there is usually a wait), which was more like a late lunch for us. We were so full that we didn’t eat again until 6:30 the next day! And you can bet we’ll be back again soon. I’m determined to figure out that macaroni and cheese recipe! Meanwhile, if you’re anywhere near this area, a trip to Mike’s Farm is a must; you’ll thank us for the hot tip.

Emergency Delivery

One of our customers works in the corporate world in an extremely fast-paced, demanding position. She called us late last week and said: "Help! I’m having a terribly stressful day and I need some bon bons right away!" Since we deliver in our local area, this was not a problem. Pascal packed up a tin of her favorite flavors (Café au Lait and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough) and I headed over to her office. She looked so grateful to see me when she rushed down to the lobby to retrieve her delivery. Later that afternoon, this email message (complete with cute cartoon) landed in our inbox:

"Thank you in advance for the ‘emergency’ bon bon delivery. It’s one of those days when you just really really need a bon bon!"

Chocolate Emergency

Knowing that we can be of service during stressful times makes it all worthwhile for us. Got a bon bon emergency? We’ll be there! All you have to do is call.

Eco-Chic Turns Yellow into Green

I’m foModern Venus Lifestyle Coachrtunate to have incredibly beautiful and talented friends; one of them being Marianne Talbot, Esquire. Marianne lives in Park Slope, Brooklyn in a charming brownstone with her wonderful husband and two kitties. She is a vegan, an animal rights advocate, and a very chic and stylish eco-conscious urban citizen. Her company, Modern Venus, is based on the concepts of Power, Poise and Brilliance. Recently, on her blog, Marianne gave this brilliant suggestion for "Instant Eco-Chic":

I never use my yellow or white pages anymore – do you? Those giant books just added clutter to my home and office and I was sick of lugging them into the trash every year.

Solution: here is a website called Yellow Pages Go Green http://www.yellowpagesgoesgreen.org/stop-yellow-pages/ where you can register yourself to STOP the annual delivery of yellow and white pages!! All you do is log in your info, and they take care of the rest. Now let your fingers do the walking across your keyboards to save tons of natural resources!

I loved her suggestion; what a quick, easy, way to make a difference! I immediately took Marianne’s advice, and I hope you will too…

Project Run-Away

Whoo-hoo! Its Project Runway night. Yes, I’m completely hooked. Not having a television chez nous has proven to be a wonderful way to connect with friends. This season, my friend Matt and I have a standing date on Wednesday nights to watch Project Runway. I’m a Leanne fan. Although I don’t aspire to make my own clothing designs out of car parts and groceries, I do think fashion is fun!

Cleveland tank from eBayI thought I’d share a few fascinating fashion-related blogs that I’ve discovered in my internet travels. Let’s call these Project Run-Away blogs. One of my favorites is Sentimental Value. The author posts clothing items that have been listed on ebay.com with the seller’s back story. From tap shoes to antique gowns, from wedding dresses to used jeans, from alligator shoes to belly dancing costumes, these clothes have hysterical stories. A recent entry is a red sequined gown.  The owner writes: "I hate to let it go because it has great sentimental value; I was once levitated in it in a magic act.: Here’s another that cracks me up – the owner of this pink "Cleveland" tank top writes: "I bought it on impulse in the Cleveland airport recently while coming home from a weekend trip. I was a little tired and trail mix just wasn’t enough, what can I say?"

Another blog entitled: Why would you knit that? is dedicated to ugly things that people can knit. Perhaps one of the most famous items featured is the Coat of Many Colors by Catrina Bonet Designs, And lest we think that only regular folks make fashion faux pas, we have Second City Style to remind us that even celebrities and fashion pros also do crazy things like wearing Crocs in a French Vogue photo shoot and dressing like giant watermelons. It seems that Second City Style is a fan of Project Runway too. Check out their funny recap of last week’s episode.

Baby Food

Unique baby shower treats

So what kind of food should one serve at a baby shower? Baby food, of course!  It was the perfect choice for our Sunday brunch shower.  Here’s our "baby food" menu:

Salad:

Baby Greens with

French Vinaigrette and

Toasty Warm Goat Cheese

Main Course:

Hogs and Quiches

Roasted Baby Carrots

Oh, Baby! Broccoli Salad

Bun in the Oven Rolls with

Little Honey Butter

Dessert:

Ice Cream and "Pickles"

Petit Fours

Beverages:

Tiny Bubbles (Champagne)

"Baby Won’t" Wine

 (Pinot Noir or Pinot Grigio)

Baby Blue Punch

Sodas, Water, Coffee, Tea

For our "hogs", we offered bacon, sausages, and sweet bacon and sausage bites; our "quiches" selection included: Quiche Lorraine, Three-Mushroom Quiche, Broccoli and Cheese Quiche, and Smoked Salmon and Asparagus Quiche. My brother loves cars, so we’re decorating the baby’s room with a vintage car theme. In homage to my own brother’s childhood filled with Tonka trucks and Matchbox cars, we found some vintage Tonkas on ebay.com to use as serving dishes. The red and yellow pieces seen here next to our salad course housed the Little Honey Butter (which was in plastic liners so the butter didn’t touch the trucks). We also had a blue "monster" Tonka that carried a truckload of sour cream.

Perhaps our most surprising "baby" food was ice cream and pickles for dessert. We served a scoop of French vanilla ice cream in martini glasses with a "pickle" garnish. The pickles were actually sugar cookies with key lime frosting made by the talented team that owns Flour & Flower. They used different shades of green icing and tiny dark green icing dots to make a very realistic looking dill pickle!  They were a perfect accompaniment to our Baby Blue Punch. Here’s the recipe (it really is delicious!) which makes about 40-50 servings:

Delicious baby shower refreshmentsIngredients:

2 packages of blue Kool-Aid (we got the berry blue flavor), unsweetened
1 bottle of lemon-lime soda
2 bottles of white cranberry juice
¾ cup of white sugar
½ gallon of French Vanilla ice cream

Pour the Kool-Aid powder into a large punch bowl.
Add the lemon lime soda and cranberry juice.
Stir in the sugar.
Scoop the ice cream on top and serve.

A Labor of Love

Unique baby shower decorationsFor the past several weeks, we had a great time planning a baby shower for my sister-in-law, Cara, and my brother, Chad.  I’ve wanted to share all of the fun ideas we were coming up with, but Cara reads my blog (Hi, Sis!) and I knew it would ruin the surprise.  We held the shower yesterday afternoon, and it was a success!

Preferring to stay away from the traditional baby blue and pastel colors, we went with a brighter palate of reds, blues, greens, and yellows.  I bought vintage alphabet blocks and wooden toys on ebay.com, and used them to spell words like:  "BABY", "LOVE", "MOMMY", and "DADDY". The blocks created a long, low centerpiece down the middle of our 20-foot table.

Each guest had their own bouquet of wild flowers in empty baby food jars (we used Earth’s Best Organic Baby Food jars for their great vintage-feel graphic labels!).  Jennifer Rose-Sandy of Salt Harbor Designs did the mini flower arrangements, which also served as take-home party favors.  Weren’t they precious?
Organic baby food jars served as flower pots
The napkins were folded like diapers and pinned with a big yellow safety-pin in the center.  Do you see the little candy pacifiers tied to the top of each menu card?  They were made by our friend Martha (not Stewart…but she’s close) with breath mints, jelly beans and royal icing.  You can make your own by following these online how-to instructions.  At the end of the table, we made a large floral arrangement by dropping a vase down into the cardboard drum that housed the building blocks.  By coincidence, our “vase” had English text on one side and French text on the other.

Unique baby shower decorations

But a party isn’t a party without food and guests.  Our guests were lots of fun, and many of them proved to talented artists as they drew illustrations (in crayon, of course!) for Carter’s first baby book.  And the food?  We’ll share our menu with you tomorrow…

South ‘n France is pleased to announce that we are one of the competitors in the StartupNation®  Home Based 100 competition! Our company is competing with close to a hundred other businesses in the “Yummiest” category.  We think that we are indeed the yummiest home-based business in the country; if you agree, then we need your vote!  Now, through the end of October, you can vote for us as often as once a day.  Just visit our blog and click on the “Vote for Me!” button in the upper left-hand corner. A panel of judges will decide the winner using three criteria:

1) how well our business fits the category for which we entered (we think we’ve got that one covered);

2) the quality and completeness of our business description and the case we make for it; and

3) the popularity of our entry based on the number of popular votes we receive (that’s how you can help!).

Usually we focus on making sure are bon bons are cold, but this is one time when we want them to be hot, hot, hot! In our contestant profile, there is a popularity meter. Right now, it’s at a very respectable two-thirds set point, but with your help we can move that meter into the “hot” range. Help us put Wilmington and South ‘n France Bon Bons on the map! Let’s show them that our beautiful beaches aren’t the only things that are hot!

StartupNation® is a free service founded by entrepreneurs for entrepreneurs. It was created by The Sloan Brothers, who describe themselves as “lifetime entrepreneurs”. They started their first business as teenagers, buying and selling HUD houses. As young adults, they started and sold one of the world’s leading Arabian horse breeding operations and grew a consumer products import company. In the mid-90’s, the Sloan brothers created Sloan Ventures, an early-stage venture development and financing firm that has infused over $60 million in financing into fast growing, technology companies. Through their years of in-the-trenches experience, the Sloan brothers amassed a wealth of business wisdom. Forming StartupNation® in 2002 was a logical extension of their career as two of the country’s foremost business experts. Through StartupNation’s broadcast, online, print, and event channels, entrepreneurs can access much needed advice from a variety of experts and peers who’ve been through it before.

Clients Weigh In On Bon Bon Calories

A gourmet who thinks of calories is like a tart who looks at her watch.
-James Beard
Last week, we released the caloric content of our bon bons. The response from our clients has been so interesting!  We’ve heard everything from:  “No wonder Fudge Brownie is my favorite bon bon flavor—it has the most calories (140)!” to this, our favorite response:

OK.  So I appreciate your responding to your customer’s inquiries about caloric intake but SERIOUSLY, they are SO GOOD, WHO CARES??!!!!!!!    I say: ‘If you watch your calories on your main meals (take the time to make a yummy salad or yummy lean dish as opposed to grabbing fast food), then desert is where you SPLURGE!!!’  Ah, I should have been a nutritionist.

Peace and MUCH Bon Bon love from your Bon Bon eating (with no shame or counting) fitness fanatic friend,
Caroline

It’s true that we do have many clients who are “fitness fanatics”, including several fitness instructors and a dietician. Why?  We believe it stems from the concept that “there ain’t nothing like the real thing” when it comes to being fully sated. Because we make our bon bons the old fashioned way with real ingredients, they are delicious and satisfying. You really can eat just one. In fact, not so long ago a customer called to place an order because “she was going on a diet”. She explained that although she intended to lose weight, she did not intend to give up chocolate; therefore, she was ordering “the best”. She planned to store the bon bons in her freezer and eat one whenever she craved something chocolate-y and sweet.
This philosophy is right in line with that of Mireille Guillano, author of French Women Don’t Get Fat. Her book addresses The French Paradox, their ability to eat good food, drink fine wine, and remain slim and healthy. Guillano attributes the French women’s penchant for slimness to their attitude toward food, a focus on the best and freshest ingredients consumed in moderation, and frequent, brisk walking. Her message is: “Be good to yourself, be good to your body, and enjoy!”

As for chocolate, she is a big fan. Guillano advises us to relish the experience of eating chocolate. Take small bites. With each bite, take a moment to hold the chocolate in your mouth so you can savor the flavors and their nuances. When you allow yourself the pleasure of fully enjoying the experience (French women eschew all guilt around eating), just one piece of chocolate will feel like so much more. Oh, and Caroline, you’re right. There’s hardly a mention of calories in the entire book.

Love for Sale

Sometimes exemplary customer service means being willing to step up to a challenge that other businesses just aren’t willing to take on. It was a Sunday morning during the early, “dark days” of our business.  Our start-up fund was depleted, our customer base was still miniscule, and I was fretting about how we were going to make our next mortgage payment when the phone rang.  It was a woman who identified herself as a concerned mother from out of town.  Her daughter had broken up with her boyfriend, she explained.  She endorsed the boyfriend as a wonderful guy who wanted to do something special to win her daughter back.  And… it absolutely had to happen that day.  “Please help him”, she urged.  “We’ve been calling florists and chocolate shops all over the area, and no one will agree to help him do it all on such short notice.”
“What exactly does he want to do?”, I asked.

“He wants to send her a card, and chocolate and flowers and stuff”, she replied, “and nobody will take on the task.  In fact, most florists aren’t even open!”

“Well, we’re not a florist”, I hedged, “but we still might be able to pull something together for you.”
I’d been sitting there waiting for the phone to ring, how could I turn away business?  I’m not a professional floral designer, but I do know how to arrange a presentable bouquet of flowers.  If that’s what we had to do to sell our next pound of bon bons, I was willing to do it.
“Great”, she replied!  “I’ll have him call you right away!”  Before I could say another word, she hung up.  Minutes later, the phone rang.  The ex-boyfriend turned out to be a Marine who had just returned from his deployment in Iraq.  He explained that during his absence abroad, he and the girlfriend had gotten into a silly argument over the telephone.  She had refused to talk to him since.  Now that he was back from his military duty, he just had to win her back.  And, it had to happen that very day.  I’m a sucker for romance, and this made-for-the-movies drama definitely pulled at my heartstrings.
“Okay”, I answered, “how do you want us to help?”

“Well, I want to send her flowers—lots of flowers, and your bon bons of course, and a card, and balloons, and a stuffed animal.  I want to just blow her away.”

“What’s your budget?”, I asked, expecting him to give me a number ranging between one and a few hundred dollars.  I was off by a zero.  This young love-struck Marine wanted to drop a couple of thousand dollars on a larger-than-life gesture of chocolate, flowers and balloons that would help him win his girl!

“Okay.”  I stammered again, stunned at this wild card of an opportunity.  “Let me put something together.”

I hung up, shouted out a victory whoop and started our own militaristic deployment.  Within minutes we had mobilized our troops, family and friends who kindly dropped everything and rushed to our rescue.  We had exactly five hours to pull this off!  One team took on flower procurement, raiding every wholesale warehouse, grocery store and available florist in the area.  Another team was put in charge of rentals of  helium tanks and U-Haul since we didn’t have a suitably large delivery vehicle.  Another individual was designated as our personal shopper for a romantic card, an adorable oversized stuffed animal and vases for all of those flowers.  Our space became “Operation Love Marine”, where we blew up balloons, assembled balloon bouquets and flower bouquets, and packed bon bons.  Less than five hours later, we pulled up in front of the unsuspecting girl’s apartment to deliver several pounds of chocolate, almost 200 helium-filled balloons in bouquets, and twelve dozen roses arranged in vases.

Happy couple

We asked the Marine to keep us posted on his progress in winning back his girl, but we never heard from him again.  I hope that he found happiness like the Marine in this photo.  Even if it wasn’t the girl who received his lavish display of love and affection, he deserves someone special.  We know that he was responsible for at least one happy ending; thanks to this mysterious Marine, our mortgage got paid that month.  And it was all because we were willing to say “yes” to a customer’s unusual request.
