There is so much depth to this book, I've been studying it for years. Of course, I probably wouldn't need money on a deserted island, but the principles are universal and apply to just about everything. It's about a hen-pecked, over-worked husband whose life takes a turn for the better when his nagging wife and her dour parents are all simultaneously killed in a car crash. At last, Alexandre will be left in peace!

His first act as a widower is to set all of the farm animals free. Then, in a stroke of ingenious laziness, Alexander designs a system of pulleys over his bed so that he can remain there "forever". True to his intention, Alexander stays in bed for weeks, 24/7: sleeping; eating cheese, bread and sausage; drinking wine; and playing his tuba. His little dog takes care of the shopping, trotting between the farm and the village market with a basket in this mouth to carry the provisions he "buys" from the local shopkeepers. The other village men folk become insanely jealous until a woman woos Alexandre out of bed and back to the altar. But Alexandre quickly "returns to his senses"; the movie ends shortly after he flees the church as a runaway groom.

Now as his wife, I suppose I should be highly insulted that this film brings him such delight. But, I don't really mind. In fact, I have this secret plan of one day finding a team of workers to create his own temporary over-the-bed pulley system for sausage, cheese, and wine. I'll present it to him as a surprise gift and leave him to a long weekend of being "bienheureux". As for me, I'll play the role of the little dog and head off on an extended shopping spree. The way I see it, we'll both be very happy indeed.

I'm trying to de-clutter the office. While going through old papers, I came across one of our "vintage" flavor cards. In the very early days of the business, I used to hand-write our flavor cards with magic markers on 3x5" unlined index cards! When we started getting so many orders that my hand cramped and I no longer had the time to "play with magic markers", we invested in printing our first flavor legend. It looked like this: the colors on the card were only an approximate match to the true foil colors (for example, our Peanut Buttah bon bon is actually wrapped in a light blue foil). Although it was better than nothing, it sometimes confused our early customers. We also didn't like that the flavor legend was twice the size of our 8-piece Bon Bon Sampler! As business improved, we invested in a more sophisticated flavor legend which has now gone through several evolutions, including the recent addition of our newest flavor, Café au Lait. I have a new and improved flavor card design idea in mind. But, I've always had "champagne taste on a beer-bottle budget" and for the moment, my wonderful idea is too cost-prohibitive. Until we're able to upgrade our flavor legends once more, I'll just have to take comfort in the fact that in the past two-and-a-half years, we've already come a long way.

("Vintage" South 'n France flavor legend / Our current flavor legend)

It got me thinking about the funny mistranslations we've laughed at over the years (our own and those of others). One of my all-time favorites is from the Russian singers who sang phonetically on the cruise ship where I worked. They interpreted Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" lyrics as: "I should have changed my stupid lock; I should have made you brush your teeth". Here are a few more silly ones:

In a Parisian hotel lobby: Please leave your values at the front desk.

In a hotel in Athens: Visitors are expected to complain at the office between the hours of 9 and 11 A.M. daily.

On the menu of a Belgian restaurant: Our wines leave you nothing to hope for.

Outside a Moroccan tailor shop: Ladies may have a fit upstairs.

In a Rome laundry: Ladies, leave your clothes here and spend the afternoon having a good time.

Advertisement for donkey rides in Greece: Would you like to ride on your own ass?

Truth be told, I had never even given the art much thought aside from touring a Murano glass factory near Venice a few years ago. But, I'm always up for a new adventure, so I booked my first lesson with great anticipation.

In high school, my brother took a pottery class and gave me the final masterpiece that he created. He called it "The Ketchup Bowl". It is a deep jagged-edged bowl with red, navy and teal blue streaks running down the sides. I treasure this eclectic bowl because he made it. "How fun it will be to create a similar piece of artwork that he can now love and cherish", I thought, visions of vases like the ones pictured here dancing in my head. By the time I called up RDG Designs and Glass Blowing Center on Castle Street to make my first appointment, I had downgraded my ambitions to making a colorful paperweight. How hard could that be, right? Apparently much more difficult than I imagined. My teacher, owner Jane Greer, suggested that I start with a clear glass ornament. Adding color to glass is a whole other skill that would be introduced in Lesson Two. The first thing I learned to do was light the torch. Even this proved difficult for me; I can't even start a simple cigarette lighter without burning my fingers! But under Jane's deft guidance, in no time at all I was melting glass rods, pressing them, rotating them, and twisting them into shapes. I started to learn the rich vocabulary of the trade: acronyms like "POOP" and descriptors like "the snake that ate the mouse" - something you don't want to happen to your glass. Guess what? It happened to mine.

Here's what I love about glass-blowing (which at the beginner level does not involve any actual blowing): it's fun, but it requires focused concentration. I was so intent on learning the techniques (they look deceptively simple when Jane demonstrates them but prove to be incredibly challenging when you try them), that everything else just melted away. It was a great form of relaxation. At the end of my first lesson, I had made a misshapen icicle Christmas tree ornament that made me immensely proud. By the second lesson, I had graduated to a green and blue pendant shaped like an amoeba. I can't wait to go back and practice some more. In fact, I loved it so much, that I immediately gifted my little brother (nothing like giving him the same gift he gave me!) and my friend Matt with lessons for their birthdays. Of course, I intend to tag along. It's a great gift idea that I highly recommend. And at $50 for two lessons, including materials, the price can’t be beat!

It's fascinating to watch this tiny little creature hover in mid-air, wings flapping frantically, long beak drawing out the nectar nestled deep within the flowers.

Yesterday it occurred to me that perhaps our resident hummingbird is here for a reason. So, I quickly went to google.com and typed in "symbolism of hummingbirds". A link popped up, telling me that the hummingbird is indeed a messenger of "hope and jubilation". It is the only creature that can stop dead while traveling at full speed. It can hover, and it can also fly forward, backward, up or down. It lives on nectar and searches for the sweetness of life, having to use its long tongue to work its way through tough, bitter outer layers of plants in order to find the sweet nectar hidden underneath.

Another new-age link revealed that hummingbirds are signs of energy, vitality, joy, renewal, sincerity, healing, persistence, infinity, agility, playfulness, loyalty and affection. Sounds good to me. Apparently, hummingbirds flutter their wings in the pattern of an infinity symbol. And they seem to be tireless, despite that constant fast-paced wing-flapping motion. These birds have been known to travel as far as 2000 miles to reach their destination, a quality that reminds us to be tenacious in the pursuit of our dreams. Best of all, by seeking the sweetest nectar they remind us to seek out the good and beauty in life each day.

The hummingbird may have to work hard to find that sweet nectar, but it didn't take me long to find a smorgasbord of food for thought. Lately, I've felt like I've been hovering a lot - frantically moving my wings, but getting nowhere fast. Unlike the hummingbird, I feel exhausted, questioning whether I should continue to be persistent and tenacious in the pursuit of our dreams. The hummingbird renewed a little bit of my hope though, in its reminder that sometimes you have to penetrate a tough and bitter surface to find the sweetest nectar. And so, I'm inspired to keep on flapping my wings...

For years, I dreamed of driving an old pickup truck painted hot pink with multi-colored Gerber daisy accents. The very thought still sends Pascal into spasms. So, while I was trying to get him adjusted to the idea of moving to our pink house in the South, I decided to use a little shock therapy. My friend Vanessa took me to visit Luna Parc.

Artist Ricky Boscarino, the creator and owner of Luna Parc, is a friend of her family, and he gave us permission to tour his private residence (normally closed to the public). It's hidden in the woods of rural Sussex County, New Jersey. Only the funky lavender mailbox at the road gives it away. For me, it was love at first sight. I adore the incredible kitchen (check out that sink!), the magnificent mosaic bathroom with its gravy-boat-fountain, the exterior color palette and gingerbread trim, and the funky sculpture garden. Even the lime green walls in Ricky's work studio make my heart sing for joy.

I snapped lots and lots of photos and later showed them to Pascal: "Honey, I understand that you have reservations about that pink house", I began, my tone dripping with concern. "If you don't like it, I just wanted you to know that I've found a suitable back-up property. We could always live here instead - I just love it!" Pascal flipped through the photos with jaw-dropping horror and quickly decided that the pink house would do very nicely indeed. While I've contained my sprucing up of the pink house to moderate changes like adding window boxes, Ricky Boscarino is advancing full-speed ahead on Luna Parc. Since my visit, he is working on a new addition - a museum and ballroom wing. Click here for a full tour of his masterpiece. I will be forever grateful to Ricky for his inspiring creativity and for the important role he unwittingly played in nudging Pascal toward saying "yes" to our own colorful little abode.

Yesterday, I wrote about the wine carafe we purchased in Old Quebec City as a souvenir. Carafes and decanters are used to aerate wine, which is a very controversial topic in the world of wine. Some believe that the wine benefits from aeration, allowing the wine to "breathe". A carafe is meant to work in the same way that swirling wine in your glass does: it triggers the release of a wine's more aromatic compounds and smoothes out the tannins. Other wine experts say aerating wine is detrimental, causing it to oxidize and lose some of its aromatic qualities. But, most agree that transferring heartier red wines into a carafe or decanter does greatly enhance the aesthetic value, particularly if the carafe is one with an elegant design, made of clear glass.

The same controversy exists over whether wine tastes the same in a dollar-store drinking glass versus a crystal wine glass. Reidel, the famous glass makers, fervently insist that their glasses make wine taste better. Many wine experts support their claim. But in a double blind scientific test (where the taste testers did not know which glass was a $20 Reidel and which was priced at just $1), taste testers could not discern any difference in taste.

Here at South 'n France we subscribe to the philosophy that dining should be a pleasurable experience for all of the senses. When Pascal worked at Daniel, I tasted the cuisine as it is intended to enjoyed - served by attentive staff while I was seated in the luxurious restaurant, eating on fine china, listening to great music, and sipping good wine. I also ate the same meal, cooked by the same chefs, while seated in my living room, watching a movie in my pajamas. Believe me; the food did not "taste" the same.

To what extent does ambiance affect the taste of food? We think it matters a lot. But, then again, beauty, taste, and aesthetics are all subjective. Even though this carafe by French sculptor Etienne Meneau costs 2200 Euros, we can't imagine that it makes wine taste that much better (And, how pray tell, do you clean it?). Likewise, although we admire the originality of these custom-made glasses inspired by the Seven Deadly Sins, they don't look very user-friendly. We think we'll stick with our traditional wine glasses and carafes.

At the end of June, we had the opportunity to visit Québec City for a few days. It is our tradition to buy a Christmas ornament from each destination we visit, and Quebec didn't disappoint; there were several Christmas-themed stores offering a wide array of nutcrackers, tree toppers, ornaments and lights. Aside from our tree ornaments, the other items we purchase while on vacation could never be easily identified as souvenirs. For example, while wandering the streets of the Old City, we stumbled across this adorable store, Pot en Ciel (which means "Pot in the Sky"). They sell an incredible collection of kitchen wares just like the dishes, utensils, dish towels, serving trays, and coffee bowls you'd find in France. I could have easily dropped a few thousand dollars in this dreamy store (I wanted one of everything!), but Pascal and I settled on just two souvenirs of Quebec: a jam spoon (also called a honey spoon) and a wine carafe (also known as a decanter).

The jam spoon is designed so that the handle of the spoon can rest on the edge of the jam jar - that way the handle doesn't get sticky. Or, you can dip the spoon in honey and then rest it on the edge of your teacup so that honey drips right into the cup.

We use wine carafes at all of our cooking lesson parties to aerate our red wines. They’'re quite fragile, and this year alone, we've already gone through five of them. So, we're always on the lookout for well-designed, yet affordable carafes. We couldn't resist the beautiful one we found at Pot en Ciel, engraved with the words: "Grand Vin de France, Appellation Controllée".

Souvenir means "to remember" in French, and it is the motto of Québec: "Je me souviens" ("I remember", as in "I remember my French heritage"). The great thing about our souvenirs is that they'll do double duty. Each time we use our jam spoon or wine carafe, we'll be reminded of a glorious afternoon spent in old Québec City, but we'll also be using them as tools to create new memories in our own kitchen.

I was already booked for the entire weekend. We simply could not find a time that worked for their schedule and mine. But this sweet, endearing young man refused to give up. He thought it over for a day and then called me back with a most unusual proposal. He wanted me to go ahead and write a singing telegram that he could perform himself. "Do you sing?", I asked. "No", he replied, "but I'll try".

I couldn't resist Michael's determined, romantic efforts, so I agreed to help him out. I had a few challenges. First, I had to come up with a song that had an easy-to-sing melody for Michael. Second, I had to write lyrics with a delicate message. It was clear to me that our young Mr. Luna is head over heels for his "Lillie", but their relationship is not at the L-word stage. He wanted a heartfelt song that conveyed his emotions, but I couldn't get too mushy or say things like...ahem...I heart you. "Can you say you're going to miss her?", I asked. "Well", he replied, "As silly as it sounds, I actually will miss her a lot". I assured him that it did not sound silly at all. He completed the questionnaire I send out to those who order a singing telegram, and his answers were adorable:

Questionnaire: Does the singing telegram recipient have a significant other, and if so what is their status (i.e. married, dating, etc).

Luna's reply: Dating whenever she is not mad at him for screwing up.

Questionnaire: Tell us about any comical or embarrassing moments the singing telegram recipient has had:

Luna's reply: I am not allowed to mention.

Questionnaire: What things does the singing telegram recipient like best?

Luna's reply: bright colors (pinks and blues together), rainbow birthday cake with funfetti icing, sea turtles, watching thunderstorms, dancing, singing really loud, Rottweiler puppies, bubble wrap, musicals, large stuffed animals and me, Mike Luna

I also learned that they met at a chocolate shop. He calls her "Lilliedew" and she calls him "Moonpie". Are they cute, or what? I made Michael promise to let me know how it went. He sang to her this weekend, and here's what he said: "She loved it. She said that she was more surprised that I remembered certain dates and things since I have not always been the best about that. Charlene I really do want to thank you so much." I can't help but wonder what will happen to these two. Having been a young girl eager to travel the world and easily charmed by foreign accents, there is so much that I am tempted to say. But, I'll limit myself to this: "Moonpie, you're a gem of a guy and Lilliedew, I wish I were you."

Here's the singing telegram that Michael performed to the folk song classic: Oh, Susanna!

She's from New Alsace, Indiana
Her name is Kat Lillie
She’s a beautiful red-headed girl
And her age is 23

I met her at Harry's Chocolate Shop
The date was December 3rd
We watched the Ravens and the Patriots
When I watched her, my heart, it stirred

Chorus:
Oh, my Lilliedew
I'd never be the same
Funfetti cake with rainbow icing, yes
That’s what my life became

I had a dream the other night
We were watchin' waves upon the shore
A storm came along, but I held her tight
I couldn't have asked for more

The thunder clapped like bubble wrap
There were sea turtles all around
She sang and danced in a bright-colored dress
As if my soul she'd found

Chorus:
"You’re more refreshing than a Den Pop

More fun than a Rottweiler puppy"

At least - that's what she said - in my dream
'Cause she was wasn't mad at me

Then she disappeared into the sea
I heard Spanish voices all around
I combed the beach for seashells
And picked my heart up off the ground.

Chorus:
My sweet Lillidew
Oh, how I'll miss you so
But, I'll be waitin' here to kiss you, dear,
I just wanted to let you know

Oh, Kat Lillie, don’t forget your ol' Moonpie
If you get lonely, then just sing this song
'Cause I'll always be close by
