Read About Our Five Bon Bon Mom 2008 Finalists
Contestant One: Submitted By: 10-Year-Old Daughter, McKenzie Summary: McKenzie wrote a poem and a letter about why her Mom should win. Here’s the poem: My Mom Rocks, By McKenzie Wierse My Mom rocks She fold my socks She doesn’t complain When there’s lots of rain She rocks and rolls She paints my toes She cleans and cooks Then we read a book
McKenzie’s letter (which was beautifully printed with almost perfect spelling) detailed more reasons why she feels her Mom should win the contest. Excerpts include: “She cooks for us every night, even when she’s tired. When we get home from school, she’s always there to get us a snack, and help us with our homework. She’s thankful for what traits me and my brother have. She doesn’t wish for other children…..She goes to church every Sunday, unless somebody is sick. She tries not to rush. She takes care of us. Then even though she’s tired, she’ll help us do crafts.”
Contestant Two: Submitted By: Her Husband, Sheldon Summary:Sheldon wrote a 2-page letter about why his wife should win Bon Bon Mom of the Year. Sheldon is in the military. In January 2007, on the same day they bought a new puppy named Popcorn, Sheldon and Jenny later learned they were expecting. (Jenny sent Sheldon to the pharmacy twice to buy three pregnancy tests just to sure!). Sheldon was supposed to be ending his military service, but just one month before his scheduled release, his unit got orders to go to Iraq. With a pregnant wife, he was deployed to Iraq. While on her own, Jenny bought a house in Tennessee, remodeled it, moved their household from Georgia and delivered a beautiful baby boy, Max. Sheldon writes: “He is the coolest thing”. With no help, Jenny has handled everything—baby, dog, new house, bills, etc.. He says: “She did a great job; I could not have asked for a better mother for my son or a better wife”. Sheldon is still in Iraq (he comes home in August), and he wants his wife to be rewarded for being so incredible throughout this challenging time while he has been in Iraq and she has raised little Max on her own.
Contestant Three: Submitted by: Daughter, Judith Summary:“If ever anyone deserved to win this prize , it is my Mom. She is 75 years young and always has a kind word and a smile for everyone.” At the tender age of 75, this Mom helps a 95-year-old woman by driving her to church, helping her run errands, and balancing her checkbook and paying her bills. She volunteers to take elderly people on the town and for doctor’s appointments, is a Red Hat Lady, and is an active member of the Senior Center. She even works at an electronics job for extra cash, which she spends on helping others. It’s always been this way—when her grandchildren were young, this amazing Mom (and Nana) used to get up at 4 a.m. to drive her grandkids to hockey practice. Judith continues: “I think she is the most caring, selfless person that I have ever heard of. She is also adorable, with curly white hair, sparkling blue eyes and standing only 5 feet tall. When she was ill recently, she didn't want to bother any of us with her troubles. She ended up in the hospital with heart surgery and we didn't know that she was having symptoms! As soon as she was back on her feet and able to drive, she was helping that 95-year-old woman again. All she did was worry about what others would do without her to depend on. I think she deserves to sit home, put her feet up and eat bon bons!” Contestant Four: Submitted By: Her Daughter, Amanda Summary: Amanda’s entry was very creative—she took a page out of the Bon Bon Queen’s book and wrote a song for her Mom:“My mom raised 2 girls that eventually both moved to Wilmington. She longs to be here too. Not because of the beautiful beaches or the bon bons that she loves, but because of us. Here is a little ditty about her, sung to the tune of the Beverly Hillbillies: Come and listen to a story about a girl named Deb A great mother dear, always kept her family fed, Then one day she added 2 to her brood, And up through her heart came a bubblin' crude. Love that is, heart of gold, North Carolina sweet. Well the first thing you know 2 were grown, what a pair, Both of her girls moved away from there Said Wilmington is the place we ought to be So we loaded up the truck and moved by the sea. Wilmywood, that is. Swimming pools, movie stars. Well now for Debbie, she’d like to move closer to all her kin. And I would like to thank her for raising me again. She deserves to be the winner from this locality To have a heapin' helpin' of your hospitality Bon Bons that is. Sit back. Take a load off. Bon Mom of the year! Contestant Five: Submitted By: Daughter, Kristen Summary:Kristen also wrote us a 2-page letter about why her Mom is the best in the world. “My mom, is my inspiration and driving force who pushes me to be the best that I can be…. Illness has played a major role in our lives in the last 7 years. I experienced an accident which lead to multiple surgeries, eventually causing me to be hospitalized for 30 days. I developed a debilitating a lifelong neuropathic pain disease, with limited treatment options. My mom has stood by my side, traveled the country to specialists, driven to local appointments, done my shopping, and been a shoulder to cry on….Several years ago when my medical situation began to deteriorate, my mom chose to sell the large family home in which I grew up in. She then bought a townhouse 2 doors down from mine, in order to help me with certain things, visit, and run errands, and to make sure I’m safe and secure during the hours my husband is working.” “This is not her dream, not even remotely where she would choose to be in life….(but) Mom has been there since 2000, the year of the accident…. If I had one wish in life it would be to somehow show my mom how grateful I am to have her, even though I may not always show it! She deserves the world, she is a very strong woman and the best possible mother in the world.”
