Frequently Asked Questions: Bon Bons

South 'n France hand dipped chocolate bon bons are delectable!

Why do you make and dip everything by hand? Isn't there a faster way?

We make all of our bon bons in small batches, hand roll them and hand dip them because we think that’s what makes them taste so good. Believe us when we tell you that we have talked about and tried different ways to make the bon bon dipping process faster. Here are some of the crazy experiments we attempted: placing the bon bons on a baker’s rack and pouring chocolate over top of them; rolling them in hot chocolate on an escargot dish: and using a multi-pronged head massager so we could pierce and dip a dozen or so at a time. None of these methods worked well. If you have an idea, send it to us! We love to collect them, but we’ll probably just keep on dipping by hand.

How many bon bons are in a pound?

Because our bon bons are hand rolled, this number varies. On average, our bon bons each weigh one ounce. This means that a standard pound would contain sixteen bon bons. But, because of variations in size and density, your one pound bag could contain anywhere from fourteen to eighteen bon bons.

Why do the bon bons have to be refrigerated?

South 'n France does not use preservatives in our products and we do not use any chemicals in our chocolates to stop them from melting at warmer room temperatures. It is perfectly fine to keep South 'n France bon bons on your nightstand or next to your fainting couch for hours at a time, but to keep them fresh the longest, we recommend refrigerating them in an airtight container for up to six weeks or freezing them in an airtight container for up to six months.

Why is there a hole in each bon bon?

Our bon bons are hand dipped with a special dipping needle. The hole shows where the dipping needle was inserted into the bon bon.

What’s that coming out of the hole in my bon bon?

We chill the bon bons before dipping them, so they won’t fall apart in the warm, melted chocolate. Sometimes the sugars in the peanut butter or cookie dough or fudge react to the hot and cold temperatures and seep up to the top of the bon bon. It’s perfectly natural, and we think it makes them look even prettier.

How long does it take to make a bon bon?

We’ve yet to determine how long it takes to make a single bon bon, but we know that it is a long time. For example, take our fudge brownie bon bon: First, we bake individual batches of dark chocolate fudge brownies and then crumble them into fine pieces; we then make individual batches of chocolate fudge and fold them into the brownies. We mix this into a dough, roll the dough into individual bon bons, chill the dough, dip the dough into melted chocolate and then chill the bon bons again. You can try this at home, but be prepared to take the day off! It will take you approximately six hours to make your first batch of bon bons.

Are there raw eggs in your Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Bon Bons?

No. There are no raw eggs in any of our products. The only eggs in our ingredient-list are fully baked into our brownies before being rolled into bon bon dough.

I’m a vegetarian. Can I enjoy your bon bons?

It depends on what kind of a vegetarian you are. South 'n France does not use any gelatin in our products. All of our bon bons are ovo-lacto-vegetarian friendly (for vegetarians who eat dairy products and eggs). Our Peanut Buttah and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough bon bons are lacto-vegetarian friendly (they do not contain eggs). However, eggs were baked into the brownie part of our Fudge Brownie Bon Bons. We are unable to accommodate strict vegans as our products do contain margarine and refined sugar.

I am allergic to peanuts. I know I cannot eat your signature Peanut Buttah bon bons, but can I enjoy your other products?

Our signature bon bon is the Peanut Buttah Bon Bon. We make every effort to ensure that our other bon bon flavors do not come into contact with Peanut Buttah Bon Bons or the chocolate used to dip them. However, there is a slight possibility that our Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Fudge Brownie Bon Bons may contain trace elements of peanuts or peanut butter. If you are allergic to peanuts or peanut products, we recommend that you resist the temptation to try our delicious bon bons, and that you instead indulge in chocolates from another company that can guarantee no adverse effects for peanut allergy sufferers.

I am gluten intolerant. Can I still enjoy South 'n France bon bons?

Three of our our delectable flavors: Coconut, Peanut Buttah, and Pistachio are completely and deliciously gluten free so you can enjoy them to your heart's content! Other South 'n France products may contain gluten.

Thank you for your kind understanding and your interest in South 'n France. Please continue to follow our company, as we plan to expand our line of products to include even more delectable treats for you to enjoy!
